What is in Baby Wipes?

Published May 8th, 2012

Well, a lot of things it seems. The managing director of Irish Breeze who developed WaterWipes noticed that his daughter experienced more skin irritation when he used conventional disposable wipes. This discovery followed by anecdotal evidence of increasing diaper rash incidence inevitably led to a blue sky challenge to the Irish Breeze R&D team: How do we create a totally different kind of product, combining the convenience of disposable baby wipes with the purity and safety of cotton wool and cooled boiled water?

If you are a parent, you know that you change your baby’s diaper approximately 10 times a day. And if your baby has experienced diaper rash, you know just how irritating a simple diaper change can be on your baby’s delicate skin.

Did you know…

  • A baby’s skin is one-third thinner and much more sensitive than an adult’s.
  • One in three babies will suffer a sensitive skin condition and of these, four in 10 will go on to develop eczema.
  • A baby’s skin absorbs more than adult’s skin, meaning that a baby’s skin absorbs more of the harmful chemicals in products.

Due to these differences, a baby’s skin requires extra special care and attention. Luckily, parents can take a few simples steps to avoid rashes and skin irritation.

  • Flip over the products you’re currently using on your baby’s skin. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients, there is probably something in there that could cause irritation. Choosing products with as few chemicals, fragrances, and dyes as possible is the best way to eliminate possible irritants.
  • Be sure to change your baby’s diapers as soon as possible to avoid urine or feces coming in contact with the skin for long periods of time. When changing your baby, give the skin as much time in the open air as possible so skin becomes completely dry before the diaper is replaced.
  • If the skin is already irritated or broken, gently pat the skin when cleansing instead of rubbing. If the skin is broken, chemicals and fragrance often contain alcohol and can sting and irritate the skin further.
If your baby is experiencing diaper rash or other skin irritation, your baby wipe might be the cause. WaterWipes were designed to eliminate as many potential irritants as possible, and they contain only purified water and grapefruit seed extract as a mild moisturizer.

Midwives and dermatologists recommend that ordinary baby wipes are not used for the first few months of a baby’s life. Instead, only cooled boiled (sterile) water applied with cotton wool or something equally soft and clean should be used.

DermaH20 WaterWipes from Irish Breeze, because of their unmatched purity and mildness, are the only the only baby wipes to meet this recommendation while remaining as convenient to use as ordinary baby wipes. WaterWipes are also the only baby wipe that has been approved by leading allergy charity Allergy UK.

You can use WaterWipes without fear of damaging baby’s delicate skin.
