Sensitive skin

There is compelling scientific evidence about the impact of commercial baby wipes in the onset of nappy rash, eczema and other sensitive skin conditions in babies and young children.

One in three babies will suffer a sensitive skin condition and of these, four in 10 will go on to develop eczema, according to a recent independent study.

Independent studies in Britain, Australia and the US have identified the use of soaps, bath and shower gels, and baby wipes as among the main factors in the increased incidence of nappy rash, eczema and other skin conditions in babies and young children.

Professor David Atheron, honorary senior lecturer in paediatric dermatology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, writing in Community Practitioner 2005, stated that: “Current research suggests that irritant napkin dermatitis (nappy rash) is principally a response of the skin to the assault by irritants.

“The worst offenders in this respect are baby-washing products. Indeed, evidence is accumulating that the rapid increase in atopic dermatitis in children is due to the parallel increase in the use of such products.”

The average baby care product can contain dozens of chemicals in the guise of perfume, preservatives and colours. These chemicals include:

• Sodium Laurel Sulphate – This is a commercial detergent found in most baby and child products and can trigger eczema if exposed to the skin in high concentrations
• Propylene Glycol – Widely used in baby and child products, this chemical has been linked to conditions that depress the central nervous system
• Phthalates – An American study has suggested this family of chemicals, which are used in some baby and child hygiene products, may cause early puberty in girls and reproductive problems in boys

Hermetically sealed

Newborns

DermaH20 WaterWipes are also the only wet wipes product safe to use on newborns.

Midwives and dermatologists recommend that ordinary baby wipes are not used for the first few months of a baby’s life. Instead, only cooled boiled (sterile) water applied with cotton wool or something equally soft and clean should be used.

Independent trials and validation
