Irish Breeze Ltd started in business manufacturing cotton wool products in 1993. Within a few years it was the dominant player in the market. Several product innovations helped Irish Breeze’s rapid growth.
In the late 1990’s, wet wipes started to grow rapidly in the baby care category, to the detriment of cotton wool.
Around this time the MD’s first child, a daughter Grainne, was born. Despite knowing that midwives and health professionals worldwide recommended cotton wool and water for the ‘4th trimester,’ and even though he could bring home free cotton wool as a job perk, he and his wife decided to use baby wipes after about a week because they were so convenient.
However within a couple of days Grainne had developed a nasty nappy rash. Suspecting that the baby wipes were to blame, they quickly switched back to cotton wool and water and the irritation cleared up.
Upon investigating the composition of baby wipes, our MD was appalled to discover the plethora of synthetic chemicals and preservatives involved – without any warnings on the packs.
This discovery followed by anecdotal evidence of increasing nappy rash incidence (despite the improvements in disposable nappies) inevitably let to a blue sky challenge to the Irish Breeze R&D team:
How do we create a totally different kind of product, combining the convenience of ready-wetted baby wipes with the purity and safety of cotton wool and cooled boiled water?’
This challenge turned out to be more technically difficult than imagined – in fact it was beyond the scope of conventional skincare product science.
After numerous ‘blind alleys’, a breakthrough was finally reached in 2006, by combining several unrelated technologies not normally associated with skincare products.
A couple of years of extensive product testing and ‘in-use trials’ was completed, then finally DermaH2O WaterWipes was cleared for launch, using the mildest, purest, safest ingredient of all – virtually nothing but Ultra-Pure Water.
